About Maroma

Since 1976, Maroma has been crafting sustainable, ethical, and high-quality products from our home in Auroville, South India.

Maroma through the Ages

Born from a vision of blending creativity with purpose, Maroma started as a small-scale initiative creating incense sticks inspired by nature’s beauty and serenity.

Over the years, we have grown into a globally recognised brand, committed to upholding the values of Fair Trade, sustainability, and community empowerment.

Welcome to Maroma

where every scent tells a story, and every product carries the essence of a journey worth celebrating.

The Founders Story

The story of Maroma is one of vision, creativity, and purpose.

It began in 1976 in Auroville, South India, when Paul Pinthon, a chemist by training, combined his scientific expertise with a deep commitment to Auroville’s ideals of unity and sustainability.

Paul initially focused on creating high-quality, natural incense – a product that reflected his background in chemistry and his passion for crafting solutions that were both effective and eco-friendly.

His goal was not only to create something beautiful but also to establish a business that could financially support the development of Auroville.

In the early 1980s, Laura Reddy joined this journey, bringing with her a natural talent for communication and a creative vision that complemented Paul’s technical background. Laura’s arrival marked a pivotal moment for Maroma.

Her innate ability to connect with people, combined with her flair for design and marketing, helped elevate Maroma from a small-scale operation to a globally recognized brand.

Together, Paul and Laura envisioned Maroma as more than just a business.

They saw it as a way to empower local artisans, support Auroville financially, and inspire a global shift toward sustainable living.
Paul’s scientific expertise ensured the products were meticulously crafted, while Laura’s skills as a communicator and designer shaped Maroma’s identity and expanded its reach.

Over time, Maroma grew its range of products to include candles, soaps, perfumes, and body care items, all designed with sustainability and ethics at their core.

The duo’s unwavering commitment to fair wages, safe working conditions, and environmentally friendly practices became hallmarks of the brand. By partnering with the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), they solidified Maroma’s reputation as a brand dedicated to positive social and environmental impact.

Today, Maroma stands as a tribute to Paul’s chemistry-driven craftsmanship and Laura’s ability to connect, create, and inspire. Together, they built a brand that not only supports Auroville but also reflects the ideals of harmony, sustainability, and community, resonating with customers worldwide.
