Shifting Tones is the first exhibition of the new 2026-27 season at MAJI.

It brings together three artists: two ceramic artists-one from the Auroville region and another from Mumbai-and a painter from Auroville. Although their practices differ, they are united by a compelling exploration of colour and tone.

Harsh Patel presents works fired in a Durango firebox kiln, where the firing continues uninterrupted for 72 hours using casuarina wood. During this prolonged process, the wood ash naturally settles on the surfaces, creating rich colours and textured finishes. The resulting hues are captivating, drawing the viewer into each work and revealing the quiet collaboration between material, fire and time.

Shraddha Joshi presents black-and-white ceramic sculptures alongside a porcelain installation in pure white. By working with these restrained, seemingly non-colours, she creates a powerful visual language. The simplicity of her forms and her sensitive command of porcelain allow the material itself to speak with clarity and strength.

Hufreesh Dumasia, known for her bold use of colour, presents a series of paintings in which each work is devoted to a single dominant hue. Through subtle shifts in tone, movement, and gesture, the paintings evoke rhythm, emotion, and grace, resonating beautifully with the exhibition’s theme.

Shifting Tones explores the many ways colour shapes our perception-not only through pigment, but also through material, process, and experience. Just as our perspectives, cultures, and inner worlds are constantly evolving, these works invite us to witness subtle transformations. Together, they remind us that change is continuous, and that within every shift lies the possibility of seeing anew.
